Catherine Ryan Hyde’s Weekend Intensive on Self-Editing
In today’s tough market, self-editing has never been more important.
April 24th & 25th, 2010
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
(one hour break for lunch both days)
in Cambria
Participants are asked to bring the first 30 pages of a work in progress, and we’ll roll up our sleeves.
We’ll begin with the broader aspects of editing. Does it begin cleanly, and in the right place? Does every scene characterize and contribute to the overall momentum? Does it bog down in backstory? Then we’ll move on to other important considerations such as dialogue and its attributions. We’ll develop an eye for trimming unnecessary passages, and for honing sentences until every word carries the appropriate weight. Finally we’ll work on copyediting grammar and punctuation, and we’ll tackle the always difficult (especially for our own work) art of proofreading.
$175
Note: At 14 hours of instruction, this breaks down to $12.50 an hour. I understand that money is tight for everyone (myself included) but I believe this workshop will be cost-effective, because it can replace the need to hire an editor for your work. That said, if you literally can’t afford the fee, and money is the only thing stopping you from attending, please do let me know.
Pay at the end of the weekend, and if at any time you feel you’re not getting your money’s worth, feel free to walk away and owe nothing.

FYI, I just got a letter from the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Due to financial pressures, they are canceling both the poetry conference and the writers conference and do not have the money to issue refunds at this time. I'm glad I only signed up for the poetry conference!

Christmas Book Sale &More

SLO County Nightwriters will fill readers’ needs on December 20, 2008 at the Gazebo beside the Farmers Market in Arroyo Grande Village. Prize winning local authors will sign and give away short stories and poems and sell their published works at discount prices. Authors will display their works between noon and five pm. Some will write instant Haikusf or customers to include with Christmas presents. “Ten to twenty authors will be there,” said Susan Tuttle, Nightwriters’ president, "offering a complete range of genres. It’s our way of giving back to the community.”
Among the offerings are MURDER IN LOS LOBOS by Sue McGinty. Guy Rathbun of KCBX will interview Sue on December 17th. Loren Nicholson brings RAILS ACROSS THE RANCHOS, the story of the rebuilding of the Southern Pacific Railroad between 1885 and 1904, ROMUALDO PACHECOS CALIFORNIA and CARRILLO’S DEFIANT DAUGHTERS. Susan Tuttle will sign TANGLED WEBS. Evelyn Cole will offer her three novels, FOR THE SAKE OF ALL OTHERS, A TOUGH JOURNEY, and GAMBLING FOR GOOD MAIL along with short stories, articles and poems. Claire Gordon will sign MY UNFORGETTABLE JAZZ FRIENDS, a fascinating memoir for jazz lovers.And Bob Mott brings his nostalgic book, RADIO SOUND EFFECTS.
Carroll McKibbin will be there with his humorous memoir, APRON STRINGS. Virginia Lasher will sign her children’s book, SECRET OF CROOKED CREEK which is available, too, in all our public libraries. Karen Juran, editor of TALES FROM THE CORNER will sign, along with some of its other authors.
Some of “Sisters in Crime” will come, too, along with their wild books. Susan Tuttle said, “Many other Nightwriters, including short story prizewinner Anne Schroeder, plan to attend and Dennis Young will photograph the festive scene.”
